Use Of Aromatherapy In Cancer Paın
Massage using aromatic oils is one of the most commonly used non-pharmacological methods. Aromatherapy massage involves the use of volatile oils combined with a carrier oil or cream to manipulate the soft tissues of the body. It has been shown that aromatic massage increases blood and lymphatic circulation, reduces inflammation and edema, relaxes muscles, and increases dopamine and serotonin levels.

In aromatherapy massage, rhythmic and effective pressure is applied with effleurage movements, allowing the oils to be rapidly absorbed by the skin, increasing blood circulation and lymph flow, and relaxing muscles. It promotes improvement in muscle aches, fatigue, and sleep problems. Aromatic oils are typically absorbed through the skin barrier within 10-40 minutes. Massage applications using aromatherapy essential oils generally last about thirty minutes. When studies on the use of aromatherapy massage in cancer pain are examined, it has been shown that aromatherapy massage is effective in reducing pain in breast cancer patients, reducing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and pain for up to ten weeks. It also reduces fatigue and neuropathic pain caused by chemotherapy. Aromatic oils such as lavender, ginger, coconut oil, chamomile, bergamot, lemongrass, grapefruit, frankincense, and sandalwood have been used in aromatherapy massage for cancer patients. There are also studies in the literature reporting that aromatherapy massage is not effective in cancer pain. In a study evaluating the effect of normal massage versus aromatherapy massage in advanced cancer patients, no difference in the effect on physical and psychological symptoms between the two treatments was found. In another study, no difference was found in pain relief between groups of cancer patients receiving aromatherapy massage and those not receiving massage. In a meta-analysis of three randomized controlled trials, it was also shown that aromatherapy massage does not have a significant effect on reducing pain
Exploring the Therapeutic Potential and Safety of Aromatherapy Massage: A Comprehensive Review
A systematic review examining the effects of aromatherapy massage stated that it has a temporary effect on reducing pain but there is no study showing that it reduces pain in the long term. In another study, aromatherapy massage using different aromatic oils according to the preferences of one hundred and thirty-five women with breast cancer was found to be ineffective in reducing pain. Studies on aromatherapy application have shown that it does not have any significant side effects. In a systematic review by Bohem and colleagues investigating whether aromatherapy application is safe in cancer patients, it was reported that volatile oils generally show minimal side effects, but prolonged skin contact may cause local skin irritation and allergic dermatitis. Additionally, it was reported that some oils may exhibit phototoxic effects when exposed to direct sunlight. Therefore, a series of oils have been approved for use as food additives. Moreover, they are generally classified as safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). When the side effects of aromatherapy massage are examined, it is reported that there are no serious side effects; however, side effects such as itching, redness, dryness of the skin, burning sensation, lightening of the skin color, acne, and headache may occur.
